Using the forums
To allow constructive construction the Forums use a heirarchical threading,
this means that your replies to another's message, are attached directly to
it rather than placed at the end of all the messages.
Nettiquette
- Keep topics on thread - if you divert from the thread people
may well ignore your replies if they have no interest in the start
of the thread... start a new thread.
- Keep messages short and to the point, forums work best when
individual threads are focused.
- Don't quote more than you need to to highlight your point. Keep only
those parts of previous messages which are needed to make it clear what
you are replying to. The threaded nature of the discussions will usually
make it clear what you are replying to.
- Be careful who you quote - try and post the reply directly to
the message, not someones reply to a reply to a reply to the message...
- IF you keep the content of the thread simple, then these should be
sufficient to make the threads easy to use.
How do I find new messages?
- When you look at the list of threads on the bulletin, messages you have not read (and their replies) are marked.
- Looking at an individual message, you will see all the messages leading up to that message, and all the direct replies to the thread. Messages which you have not seen before are marked as [NEW].
-
For each of these replies you will see if there have been further
follow-ups, and how many of these you have not seen.
-
Alternatively when listing all the threads, you can change the view to
show all the messages, not just the first one in each thread, either
showing the structure of the discussion (by thread), or by the time they
were published (by date).
-
(by thread) - is the best choice if you are interested in a specific
topic, (by date) - is the best choice if you want to see what messages
which have been posted recently.
